Gurney Food Hall

Bridging Hawker Culture
with Modern Retail Luxury

Gurney Food Hall is a contemporary dining destination situated along Penang’s iconic coastal promenade. We were commissioned to design a comprehensive Environmental Graphic Design—spanning vendor stall signage, directory boards, menu architecture, and wall murals—that celebrates Penang’s rich street food heritage within a modern, upscale retail space.

A Landmark Food Destination

The challenge was to create a cohesive environmental design system that organizes over dozens of diverse food stalls while preserving the authentic, nostalgic soul of local food stalls. Every touchpoint—from the entrance directory to individual vendor menus—needed to balance high-end mall elegance with approachable street-food charm.

Harmonized Diversity Across
Every Kitchen

To prevent visual clutter while allowing each vendor’s unique culinary personality to shine, we engineered a standardized yet adaptable signage framework.

Unified Menu Architecture: Modular, easy-to-read menu boards designed with standardised typography, clear dish categorisation, and high-visibility price tags—reducing ordering friction during peak dining hours.

Custom Stall Signage Systems: Illuminated fascia boxes featuring clean, high-contrast vendor logos, dimensional lettering, and sub-branding elements that establish visual hierarchy from a distance.

Large-Scale Wall Graphic: Custom wall graphics inspired by vibrant street food culture
